In the realm of United States Presidential signatures, the offered piece is a scarce and welcome cornerstone to any high-end collection. Drawn up in 1820, this Chief Executive document is signed in black ink by James Monroe, the last of our Founding Fathers to hold the U.S. Presidency and the last from the Virginia dynasty. The vintage parchment is unevenly trimmed to approximate dimensions of 13-1/4 x 8” and features printed legal text detailing the sale of land in Abbeville, South Carolina. At the conclusion, Monroe’s dip pen endorsement projects (“7-8”) strength and clarity. The document is minimally affected by age-induced browning and a small hole having resulted from repeated compacting folds. These flaws do not impinge upon Monroe’s regal scripting.
