On 2/20/62 astronaut John Glenn became the first American to orbit the Earth. Presented is one of only 52 bills which is certified to have accompanied Mr. Glenn on the Friendship 7 mission during which he circled the planet three times. The proffered 1957 $1 Silver certificate is signed (“9”) by Glenn above the left side serial number A31941854B. This $1 note is attached to a framed & matted certificate which bears a second Glenn signature (“8”) along with mission back-up pilot M. Scott Carpenter’s (“9”) endorsement. This accompanying certificate states in ornate calligraphy style as follows: “This CERTIFIES the following U.S. currency Serial No. A31941854B accompanied Lt. Col. John Glenn on the first manned orbital flight aboard Friendship 7 Feb. 20, 1962”. Also included is a vintage printed list of fifty-two serial numbers which states the following: “We the undersigned do affirm that the following listed serial numbers represent the true and complete list of souvenir currency carried by Lt. Col. John H. Glenn within the Friendship 7 spacecraft during the 3 orbit mission of Feb 20, 1962, S.T. Beddingfield & H.H. Luetzen”. The story goes that the fifty-two bills were distributed upon Friendship 7's return to earth, to select members of NASA who aided in the mission. This is the first bill we have ever offered! S. T. Beddingfield was a pioneering NASA aerospace engineer. No information regarding H. H. Luetzen is available

The $1 silver certificate also bears the signature of a Terry Thompson who was a member of the launch crew.

The accompanying frame is in like new condition. It is made of brass colored metal, has overall dimensions of 16-1/4” x 14” and includes double matting in blue and light brown.
