Appropriately dubbed “The Mission in the Valley,” the introduction of the San Diego Padres in the 1969 expansion marked the beginning of four-division play and resultant “playoffs” rather than a winner-take-all-ticket to the World Series. This cap was worn by a Padres player during the franchise’s early seasons. The brown wool accessory features a yellow front panel with “SD” embroidered in brown, as well as a yellow button atop the six-point crown suspension. The interior sweatband is home to a “New Era” label and size “7-3/8” tag. With no identifiers (numeric or otherwise), the cap cannot be attributed to a specific player, though it is most definitely a professional model item whose design and tagging dates to 1973-1974. Light wear is evident.
