Worn by one of the club’s swashbuckling heroes during the first two years of division play (1969-1970), this Pittsburgh Pirates cap preceded the era of mix-and-match designs and throwback “pillbox” versions. The black wool accessory features a yellow “P” embroidered to the front center and a black button atop the six-point crown suspension. The interior sweatband is home to a “New Era” label, a size “7-1/4” tag and an MLB silhouette logo tag. The latter tag (combined with the solid black style) dates the relic to 1969 or 1970. On the bill’s underside, a black marker notation of “24” indicates that the cap was worn by Gene Garber (1969), John Lamb (1970) or Jim Nelson (1970). Solid wear is evident with soiling about the sweatband and perspiration-induced discoloration on the brim’s exterior.
