Fans of the old Washington Senators will certainly enjoy the nostalgic appeal of this collection of (82) photos/team issues. Highlighting this lot are (4) W. Johnson wire photos, (4) T. Williams photos and a very appealing 18 x 15-1/2” framed and matted photo of Johnson with “Babe” Ruth. Also included are (7) 1920s-50s wire photos of U.S. Presidents attending baseball games. Rounding out this offering are (10) vintage 4x5 professional 1920s photos including (2) Johnson, (2) wire photos of African American stars and (54) photo pack style team issues from the Senators second iteration in the 1960s. More on our website.

The (4) Walter Johnson wire photos date from the 1920s-1940s. Two have crop marking outlines and were apparently intended for use in publications, one has a typewritten news blurb attached to the back and all have pencil notations on the reverse. Two show Johnson in pitching poses, one shows him in a 1938 radio broadcast and one deals with his 1946 critical brain tumor. These photos show moderate signs of wear including the aforementioned crop markings. The larger of the two pitching pose images has two small missing segments which do not interfere with Johnson’s image.

Three of the Ted Williams photos are 1950s depictions of Ted in his Boston Red Sox playing days, the fourth photo shows him in 1969 as the manager of the Senators. These photos present in above average condition with light to moderate signs of wear. All four have been affixed with Seattle Times Archives holograms on the reverse.

The (7) presidential photos which measure 7x9 to 8x10 are all wire service types, (5) have typewritten blurbs attached to the reverse. The subjects are in chronological order: 1923 Harding, 1928 Coolidge, 1938 F. Roosevelt, 1945 Truman, 1952 Nixon (U.S. Senator at the time), 1953 Eisenhower and 1954 Eisenhower. All present in clean, attractive condition with deference to a crease on the Harding photo.

The (2) African American stars are Joe Black with attached news blurb declaring him the first Negro to play for the Senators and Curt Flood being introduced as the Senators newest “big name” star. Both photos are in good condition with only light traces of wear.

The (10) 4x5 photos were taken by a professional photographer and are the type which would normally be offered for sale as souvenirs. (8/10) have been stamped on the reverse as “Copyrighted national Photo”, and (3) show residue from album removal. This group includes (2) Johnson photos and one each of fellow Hall of Famers Harris and Rice. One of the Johnson photos is moderately soiled and has a notch on the left border. The other Johnson photo is lightly soiled and has an insignificant notch on the top border. The Harris photo is very nice with deference to a small bit missing from the top left corner. The Rice photo is missing a significant section at top left and a small bit at lower left. The remaining (6) photos in this group are in above average condition and include players Judge, Liebold, Marberry, McNeely, Ogden and Zachary.

The balance of this lot consists of (54) 1960s team issued photo pack types in better grade. Standouts are Williams, Piersall, Hodges, Vernon and (2) Howard.
