Description

The gold standard set of the post-war collecting hobby is undoubtedly found with the 1952 Topps Baseball edition. The remarkable realization of the collaboration between Sy Berger, “the father of the modern baseball card” and artist Woody Gelman, the fledging New York company put competitors on notice with the advent of these attractive “giant size picture cards”. The offered 1952 Topps Baseball complete set of (407) cards is the culmination of a labor of love from our consignor. Headlined by (8) SGC graded keys, this alluring set is a sight to behold ranging from the bookend cards of Pafko and Mathews to all cards in between. The approximate condition breakdown for the #1-310 portion is as follows: 20% (VG-EX or better), 30% (VG), 30% (GD) and 20% (FR or lesser) with nearly 5% of the cards (primarily from the first series) displaying reverse paper loss or writing. The #1-80 first series have red backs (a complete black back subset is available in a separate lot in this auction). The challenging #311-407 high series have an approximate condition breakdown of 15% (VG-EX or better), 25% (VG), 40% (GD) and 20% (FR or lesser).
