Peering straight ahead at a future of tape-measure home runs and seemingly annual World Series titles, 19-year-old Mickey Mantle was the subject of Bowman’s 1951 Baseball #253. Encapsulated and Graded VG-EX 4 by PSA, this particular example is an absolute must to any high-end collection. Among the post-war era’s most coveted baseball treasures, the cardboard heirloom portrays a youthful Mantle at a spring training facility (as evidenced by the palm trees in the background) with a visible outline of his original number “6” on the back of his Yankee road jersey. Text on the reverse is consistent with the widespread touting of Mantle at that time, telling of the young prospect’s abilities and potential (all of which were realized). This one features vivid colors and a clean reverse, with slightly askew centering preventing higher assessment.
