Before drug addiction and a resultant downward spiral, Dwight Gooden lived in a world of promise. After posting a stellar 24-4 mark with a microscopic 1.53 ERA at the tender age of 20, Gooden was awarded this Seagram’s 7 trophy. Crafted from plated pewter, the 5-7/8”-diameter base stands 17-7/8”-tall with the distiller’s “S” standing an additional 8-1/8”-tall. Outlining the cylinder, seven 2”-diameter metal plaques respectively represent the sports for which this honor is given. An engraving reads: “SPORTS AWARD – BASEBALL CHAMPION – 1985 – DWIGHT GOODEN.” While impressive beyond a doubt, the item shows oxidation, a series of surface marks and a small dent at the bottom, symbolic of “what could’ve been” had better care been taken.
