A boastful sort who usually made good on his brash pitching predictions, Hall of Famer Dizzy Dean was just as colorful during his post-career days in the announcer’s booth. Issued locally to KMOX listeners in the St. Louis area during the 1940s, this hand-held fan simultaneously promotes Falstaff Beer and Dean’s baseball broadcasts. The thick cardboard novelty measures 7x8 and is stapled to a 9”-long stick. On the obverse, a likeness of Dean holding a bottle of the St. Louis-brewed beer is accompanied by the Falstaff logo and “Dizzy Dean says Tune In” proclamation. Obviously in his post-playing days, Dean appears to have put on a few pounds from inactivity, Falstaff or both. The reverse showcases a colorful Falstaff logo. This Redbirds souvenir was apparently put to use in the sweltering Midwestern heat, as evidenced by a series of creases. Still, the piece is complete and presents beautifully.
